One Song, Two Takes

Some people I know are expecting. And lately, whenever I hear this iddy-biddy, reason-to-be-giddy kind of news, I keep thinking back to this little number:

It's got some of the most considerate words (IMHO) that's been said from one person to another, and I don't think words like these are possible if you don't have kids.

There's an alternate version which I used to prefer, but it doesn't resonate anymore and has lost much of its luster, especially when friends are currently undergoing the transition from husband-and-wife to mother-and-father. The two takes of "Forever Young" are pretty telling because it's the same singer singing the same song, but to an entirely DIFFERENT execution and audience.

In the past few years, I've seen many friends post pictures of their newborns on Facebook. I've seen them change frighteningly-foul diapers. Give baths. I've seen them pick their kids up, and drop them off whether it's at karate or school. I've seen them worry sick when they were sick, and stay with them at night when there were monsters in the closet. It's the most important job in the world.

When I go to visit them, it's the wild wild west whenever I see their little spawns bouncing around. It cracks me up when I ask them how old they are, and they answer by holding their fingers up, or when mom/dad ask them to pronounce my name (Nobuyuki Wakabayashi), and then ask them to spell it (poor kid).

So to those that are expecting or looking to start a family, all the best to you in these up and coming months. Be thinkin' about ya, and playin' this particular number with your Forever Young's in mind.
